Pregnancy Problem 1
Symptoms: slight vaginal bleeding brownish in color, pain in lower part of abdomen at one side followed by pelvic pain, shoulder pain, dizziness or faintness and nausea.
Potential Problem: Ectopic pregnancy- the fertilized egg implants itself outside the uterus wall such as in the fallopian tube.

Potential Problem: Hepatitis B and can be passed to the baby.

Problem 3
Symptoms: Often no symptoms, but can include: small blisters or warts in the genital area; fever; fatigue; aches and pains; vaginal discharge especially if it is yellowish, bloody, green, gray, or thick and white like cottage cheese, or with a strong odor; burning or pain when urinating; itching around genital area; itching or burning in vagina; pain in legs or buttocks; pain during sex; frequent yeast infections; skin rash
Potential Problem: HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases (can be passed on to the baby).
Diagnosis: blood test is a must test. Physical examination for throat, anus or genital area as well for rashes, sores around the genitals. Pelvic examination is done to examine inside vagina and cervix and inspection for inflammation and growth in the internal organs. Treatment: Antiviral drugs; possible cesarean delivery.
Problem 4
Symptoms: Flu-like illness with fever, muscle aches, chills, and sometimes diarrhea or nausea that can progress to severe headache and stiff neck.
Potential Problem: Listeriosis an infection from the bacterium listeria monocytogenes, which can be found in soft cheeses and ready-to-eat deli meats.
Diagnosis: Blood test.
Treatment: Antibiotics- which helps in preventing the infection to the baby.
Problem 5
Symptoms: Mild flu-like symptoms, or possibly no symptoms.
Potential Problem: Toxoplasmosis – it is a parasitic infection that can be passed on to the baby, which can be contracted from cat feces or soil, or from eating raw or undercooked meat that contains the parasite.
Diagnosis: Blood test. If the mother gets infected the fetus can be tested through amniocentesis- it is a test on the fluid surrounding the baby to examine any birth defects. If it is found infected the mother is given medication of pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine. Babies with infections are treated at birth till their first birthday with these medications.
